German Fashion Designers
Germany is famous for cars, an amazing educational and health system and very disciplined working rules. But when it comes to a crazy fashion scene, people rather think about France, Italy or UK than Germany. In fact, many famous German fashion designers are working for fashion brands, which were founded outside their homecountry.
Karl Lagerfeld is one of the most famous German fashion designers in the world. Born in Hamburg in 1933, the young Lagerfeld loved to dress different than all his classmates. His wealthy parents allowed him to take private language lessons at a very young age and finally, the 17 year old Lagerfeld moved to Paris to pursue a career as a drawer. He became art director of the label Chloe, was a lecturer for the University of applied arts in Vienna and until now, Karl Lagerfeld is the chief designer of Chanel and Fendi. His selected muses always become a hit on the fashion olymp and Karl Lagerfeld with his unique style and funny quotes is an icon on his own.
Wolfgang Joop was born in 1944 in Potsdam near Berlin. Until his family moved to Braunschweig, he grew up on his grandparents farm. His major breakthrough occured, when Joop and his wife Karin took part at a fashion competition. Due to his success at this competition, Joop became a fashion editor and finally founded his own fashion brand named Joop! The first pret-a-porter show took part in 1982. After many successful years, Joop sold all his company shares in 2001 and founded the brand Wunderkind in 2003.
Wolfgang Joop is living in a homosexual relationship. In 1985, he got divorced from his wife Karin, with whom he has two daugthers. One of his daugthers, Jette Joop, is also a famous fashion designer in Germany. Wolfgang Joop is also the author of many books and a judge in the tv show Germany’s next Topmodel by Heidi Klum.
Jil Sander was born in 1943 and is one of the most famous, internationally well-known German fashion designers. Heidemarie Jiline Sander studied textile engineering. At the age of 24, Jil Sander opened her first boutique in Hamburg. Her major breakthrough came with the “invention” of the onion-look – several pieces are worn together. Many years after she left her own company, Jil Sander returned in 2012 as a creative director. Her key fashion items are a simple white blouse, a simple trenchcoat and a trouser suit with very clean cuts.
Philipp Plein was born in 1978 in Munich and is one of the most famous German designers. He attended a well known boarding school called Schloss Salem ( = Castle Salem) and studied law at the Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen. He i.a. became well known with his brand Philipp Plein in 2008, when he equipped the contestants of Germanys Next Topmodel by Heidi Klum with an heavy metal collection for a runway show in Barcelona. In 2016, he founded the Philipp Plein group, which includes his own brand, Plein Sport and Billionaire Couture.
Plein is especially famous for inviting a-grade celebrities to his shows and parties as well as his glittery and funky fashion items.
Michael Michalsky was born in 1967 in Göttingen. He studied at the London College of Fashion and started his career in fashion in 1995 as the chief designer for adidas. In 2006, Michalsk founded his own fashion brand called Michalsky.
Michalsky is well known for his open mind when it comes to cooperations with differend brands and designers. In 2009 ad 2010, he designed a limited edition of a detergent pack for the brand Ariel. During his time at adidas, he also initiated cooperations with designers like Stella McCartney or Yohji Yamamoto. In 2009, the German VOGUE magazine titled him as the new “German fashion pope”. Same as Wolfgang Joop, Michalsky was a judge in the tv show Germanys next Topmodel by Heidi Klum in 2016.
