German Hippies

Flowerpower, peace and love – the typical hippie stereotype. But the main figureheads of Germanys 1960s liberal movement (German hippies) didnt only stand for love and peace, but purposefully opposed against current political injustices with their own weapons: brain and ideologies.

Rainer Langhans

Rainer Langhans was born on June 19, 1940 and until now, considered as one of the most famous German hippies. As one of the founders and main figures of the Kommune I ( = community I), which was a political motivated flat-sharing community, he initiated and took part at many left-motivated campaigns such as the famous Pudding-Attentat ( = pudding assasination). As a sign of protest against the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Langhans and other members of the Kommune I planned to throw pudding on US-Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey during a state visit in Berlin.

During his time in the Kommune I, Langhans was in a relationship with the German photo model Uschi Obermaier. According to Langhans, media showed the Kommune I in a completely different way than it actually was – a place where people share everything, not only physical love. After him, privacy is actually political.

Langhans is still a supporter of communities, but today, they just occur in a different form – online. He is a very well-known interview guest on German tv and famous for his very interesting and unique thoughts about life and society. Because of this fact, a lot of people call him “crazy”, but according to Langhans, he himself calls him mad, but states, that the others are even more weird.

What was the Kommune I? The municipality I (K1) was a politically motivated community in Germany. It was founded in West Berlin on January 1, 1967, and finally dissolved in November 1969.

Uschi Obermaier

Uschi Obermaier was the figurehead of a new female sexual revolution in the 1960s. Born on September 24, 1946, Obermaier joined the Kommune I as the girlfriend of Rainer Langhans in 1968 and soon became a famous photo model.

Obermaier was not an active member of the extra-parliamentary opposition, but – due to her beauty – one of the main figureheads of the Kommune I. Press liked to write about her relationship with Rainer Langhans and named the two the “most beautiful couple of the APO ( = extra-parliamentary opposition).

In her autobiography, Obermaier revealed affairs with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones. Between 1973 and 1983, Obermaier was living together with Dieter Bockhorn. The two went on roadtrips in hippie trails such as in Mexico and India, where they also organized an unofficial wedding. After his death due to a motorcycle accident in 1983, Obermaier got to know an American couple and from then on lived with them. Today, she is working as a jewelry designer.

Gisela Getty & Jutta Winkelmann

The twins Gisela Getty and Jutta Winkelmann were born on April 3 1949. Both German hippies sisters became famous as friends of Rainer Langhans and in the course of the 1968s student movement. The two “sex-symbols” moved out from their hometown Kassel to become famous. In early 1973 and their first destination Italy, Rome, the twins met the 16 year old John Paul Getty III., grandson of billionaire John Paul Getty with whom the 23 year old Gisela fell in love. A few months later, John Paul Getty III. got kidnapped and released after five months when his grandfather finally agreed to pay millions after the kidnappers cut off John Paul Getty IIIs right ear. Later on, Gisela and John Paul Getty III. married and got a son called Baltazar Getty, who is a famous actor.

After a cocktail of drugs, John Paul Getty III. suffered from a stroke and remained disabled until his dead in 2011. While Gisela Getty stayed in the US until 1981, Jutta Winkelmann went back to Germany to stay with Rainer Langhans and several other women in a so-called “Harem” – a spiritual symbiotic community. In 1993, Gisela Getty and John Paul Getty IIIs marriage got divorced after his families wish.

Until Jutta Winkelmanns dead in 2017, the twins were still in spotlight in Germany. Gisela Getty is still working as a photographer and author in Munich.

Fritz Teufel

Fritz Teufel was born on June 17, 1943. He was an active member of the student movement and a member of the terroristic movement from June 2. Next to Rainer Langhans, Fritz Teufel was one of the founding members of the Kommune I.  He was considered as an icon for the Spaßguerilla ( = fun guerilla), which was according to him a new form of the class society. On February 19, 1982, he caught a lot of attention in a tv discussion about good manners with the German Federal Minister of Finance, Hans Matthoefer. Duing the conversation with the moderator, he pulled a water pistol and sprayed towards the minister. Matthoe responded by pouring Teufel with a glass of wine.

Dieter Kunzelmann

Dieter Kunzelmann was born on July 14, 1939. He was the head of the terroristic group Tupamaros Berlin-West, a left-radical political activist and one of the founders of the Kommune I, where he functioned as the leading troublemaker. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he made a name for himself through political actions and egg throws. On October 11, 1993, Kunzelmann peltet Eberhard Diepgens, the mayor of Berlin, car with an egg. When he was sentenced to imprisonment for one year in 1997, Kunzelmann staged his death through a death notice in a newspaper in 1998. On July 14, 1999, his 60th birthday, he officially resurfaced to serve his sentence.

Rudi Dutschke

Rudi Dutschke was born on March 7, 1940 and one of the most famous German hippies of the 1960s. He was a sociologist and political activist, who was fighting for marxistic ideals. One of his main goals: the elimination of hunger, war and rulers. He saw himself as a socialist, who stood in the Christian tradition. Dutschke saw Christianity as as specific expression of of hopes and dreams of human mankind.

In April 1968, a young labourer called Bachmann, shot Dutschke three times, who suffered severe brain injuries. Dutschke had to learn how to speak and get back his memory for months in therapy. On December 24 1979, Rudi Dutschke drowned in his own bathtub as a result of an epileptic attack – a late episode of the assassination attempt from 1968.
